Battle Over Gun Control Battle is Brewing
To paraphrase Edward Bulwer-Lytton observations in 1839 that “”The pen is mightier than the sword”, the question for President Obama and the NRA is: “Is the pen mightier than AK-47s?”
There is no easy answer to the above question. While our parody portrays Obama as the “good guy” (Gary Cooper) who defeats the “bad guys” against overwhelming odds, our current situation is not so predictable. The liberals on the left have been screaming for years for tougher gun controls and the moment seems ripe after the recent Sandy Hook massacre of 26 innocent people, including 20 children. However, we know that historically, almost all attempts at curtailing the ownership of guns have failed.
As the National Rifle Association (NRA) flexes its muscle, it is obvious that this will be a tough battle for Obama and his administration. The NRA already has released an ad attacking Obama and his allies as ‘elitist hypocrites’ whose children are protected by federal agents while denying the same protection for other school children. They have also encouraged thousands to rally against stricter gun control across America. Ironically, there were five people injured after firearms accidentally discharged at three different guns shows.
In the movie, “High Noon” town marshal Will Kane (Cooper) begs his “friends” and town people to stand up with him against a gang of four killers that threaten to kill Kane due to his previous role in convicting one of them. At noon, Kane ends up facing the four killers alone and would have been killed were it not for the surprised return of his new wife at the last moment. With the NRA assembling the full power of its gun lobby and members, Obama might not be as lucky. Even Bill Clinton is telling Obama to proceed with caution.
There will be a reprieve from gun control tomorrow due to the big inauguration and celebration, but the gun control controversy will be waiting for Obama on the first official day of his second term. There is “no rest for the wicket” nor for the “good guys”!
Note: In late breaking news as I write this, on Saturday night, a teenage boy with several weapons, including an assault rifle, killed five people, three of them children, at a house in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
