There are some website, such as Live. Hope. Believe, that are hoping that Rick Santorum is a David who can defeat the overcomfident Goliath, Mitt Romney. In searching the Internet for a suitable painting to parody this possibility, I found that most of the painters such as Caravggio, David, de Volterra and Rubens depicted the subject after David had defeated Goliath. I wanted to do the parody on an artwork that showed Goliath overcomfident and mocking David at the beginning of the challenge. I found what I was seeking in a color litograph by Osmar Schindler (c. 1888) at Wikipedia.
Unfortunately, the litograph only shows the back of David’s head. After creating Romney’s face on Goliah, I attempted to show Rick Santorum’s face by having David twist his head back just prior to launching the stone in his sling. However, try as I might, I could not get the head to look anatomically correct and eventually decided to leave the David figure in its original rendition. You can see one of my unsuccessful attempts with Santorum at the lower left of this post.
